Car ton bras sait porter l'épée, il sait porter la croix.
I was surprised at how different the French is from the English. Well, I certainly do prefer the French.

The French is patriotic. The English is bland and anodyne. Ah, for the days when the French were Canadian patriots! Or for that matter for the days when I was.
Ah, patriotism. I've wondered a lot over the past few years just what I am to make of my relationship to this country. I imagine you have a more complex question to answer there. You know, the simple questions about what the relationship between a Christian and the State is supposed to be, what my particular duties and responsibilities are, and to what extent current fashion should dictate that. The third, of course, should not be an issue, but I really do, alas, find that since I am of a certain class and do not wish to be associated with a lower class (even though America really is a classless society), I do not associate with certain opinions about the proper relation of man to state. Now, there are limits to that: no matter how "cool" abortion is and how hickish it is to be opposed, I'll stand with the illiterate hicks and rubes any day (and I find they actually tend to read more than the former class). But, the idea of voting for a Republican ever is just, well, not even considered because it simply isn't cool. Anyways. Happy new year.
