Sports stadiums. There should never be a single dollar paid from the public coffers for professional sports stadiums. If the stadium were a good investment, there would be a private investor for it.
Detroit just declared bankruptcy shortly after spending hundreds of millions of dollars on sports stadiums which completely flopped.
The concluding paragraph says it all:
Detroit may no longer provide pensions or adequate municipal services. But it will have state of the art sports venues…for at least a few years…until some other city builds a cooler one.

As a massive sports fan, I completely agree with you. It is interesting to note the recent local news that Tom Rickets and the Cubs will pay about 500 million dollars of their own money into renovations. This is, of course, after a failed attempt to secure some public funding. The mayor was right to deny such a request, and he fought hard against that insane, babbling idiot of an alderman, Tom Tunney, to get the deal done for the Cubs private investment into the neighborhood.
